The artists Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu of the collaborative studio HYBYCOZO created the "Aurum" sculpture. It consists of a dozen patterned stainless steel cone-like polyhedra welded together to form an object known as a small stellated dodecahedron.
There's nothing small about this sculpture, however. It measures 12 feet by 13.5 feet and weighs nearly 2,000 pounds.
A dodecahedron is a three-dimensional figure with twelve pentagonal sides. Stellation is the process of extending the edges or faces of a figure to form a new object.
The sculpture's gold finish reminds us of the important role the San Francisco Mint played in the economic life of the region and the nation during and after the Gold Rush.
At night an array of LEDs embedded in the sculpture illuminate it and the surrounding area.
